Tyres and balancing

Tyres make up an important part of your BMWs suspension. If your tyres are not performing at their best you could end up with vibration, noises and feel like your steering is pulling to one side to name a few issues.

Tyre inflation

It is really important to ensure your tyres are inflated correctly at all times as even driving a short distance with low tyre pressures can damage the tyre. This could make your vehicle dangerous

Wheel alignment

If you have noticed uneven tyre wear when getting your tyres replaced, it is good practice to have 4 wheel alignment carried out to prolong the life of your newly fitted tyres. This should also be done if you have had work carried out to suspension components. It is worth having your vehicle inspected for any play in suspension before you pay for alignment, as you may find it is not effective due to worn bushings or arms.

Balancing a Tyre

When tyres are out of symmetry an imbalance is inevitable. Uneven tread wear is often the culprit due to the toe not being set correctly. This would usually be more noticeable at higher speeds through a vibration often felt through the steering wheel.

As you would imagine this should not be happening and equally may affect safe vehicle operation or even cause further damage to other elements such as the suspension and / or steering.

Balancing a Tyre - How & Why

Every time a tyre is changed it should be correctly balanced. We have special tyre balancing equipment for this very task.

The machine simulates a tyre rotation to measure the rolling performance of the tyre. Where imbalances are detected they are corrected by adding weights inside or outside of the rim of the wheel or alloy. The weights themselves distribute the spinning mass equally to balance undulations that are either clamped or glued.

Run-flat tyres

Most modern BMWs now leave the factory with run flat tyres and some owners continue to fit these. They have a stronger sidewall to enable you to continue driving a short distance after a puncture. Run flat tyres are more expensive than standard tyres and they still need replacing after a puncture. Many BMW owners ditch their run flat tyres in favour of a more flexible side walled tyre which improves the handling. You must inform your car insurance provider if you choose to swap to standard tyres, as this is considered a vehicle modification, however there is rarely an additional cost for this.

BMW tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS)

More modern BMWs tyre valves are fitted with sensors which form part of the tyre pressure monitoring system. These sensors can detect slight changes in pressure to let you know if you are low on pressure or may have a puncture. The system must be reset after altering your tyre pressures to ensure it is accurate.
Unfortunately sometimes these sensors do fail, if you suspect this please do not rely on your tyre pressure monitoring system. It is good practice to check your BMW tyre pressures once a month.
